Coorg Excelsa, Natural
VPG Estate
Coorg Excelsa, Natural is a rare Excelsa (Coffea liberica) from VPG Estate in Balele, Kodagu, grown at 800 metres on land sharing a direct boundary with the Nagarhole Tiger Reserve.
Excelsa is a less common species than Arabica or Robusta, valued in specialty coffee for its climate resilience and distinct cup character, sitting between the two more familiar species in acidity and body. Processed naturally, sun-dried as whole cherry, this lot expresses tropical fruit notes of jackfruit and mango, layered over a woody character, within an estate-wide agroforestry system intercropped with pepper, cocoa, and native fruit trees.

Flavor Journey
Roast Approach
Medium roast is a reasonable starting point for this lot, letting the tropical fruit character stay present while allowing some of the natural process’s woody depth to come forward. Excelsa behaves differently in the roaster than either Arabica or Robusta, its bean structure and density sit between the two, so it benefits from a slightly more attentive roast than either species alone typically demands.
Lighter roasts bring the jackfruit and mango notes forward most clearly, along with a brighter, more tea-like acidity, since Excelsa’s acidity generally sits between Arabica’s brightness and Robusta’s flatness. Darker roasts move the profile toward chocolate and cream character, trading some of the tropical fruit brightness for body and roundness.
Because Excelsa is grown in limited volume and behaves somewhat unpredictably compared to more familiar species, small test batches before committing to a full roast profile are worth the extra care this lot rewards.
Why Roasters Choose This Coffee
Coorg Excelsa, Natural comes from VPG Estate, a three-generation family farm in Balele, Kodagu, sharing a direct boundary with the Nagarhole Tiger Reserve. Excelsa remains a rare species in specialty coffee, grown in far smaller volume globally than Arabica or Robusta, giving roasters access to something genuinely uncommon rather than another variation on a familiar theme.
Roasters value this lot for the distinct position Excelsa occupies between Arabica and Robusta: moderate acidity, medium to full body, and a cup character that captures elements of both higher and lower-altitude coffees at once. Natural, sun-dried processing builds further sweetness and tropical fruit expression into the bean, producing notes of jackfruit and mango over a woody base.
Grown under agroforestry intercropped with pepper, cocoa, and native fruit trees, directly bordering protected forest, this lot gives roasters a genuinely distinctive single-origin offering, useful for building programme depth or introducing customers to a species most have never encountered.
In the cup, Coorg Excelsa, Natural typically expresses:
- jackfruit and mango upfront
- a woody, structured character through the body
- moderate acidity between Arabica and Robusta
- a rounder, chocolate-leaning character as roast level deepens
Why Roasters Love Coorg Excelsa, Natural:
- A rare species in specialty coffee, offering genuine differentiation from Arabica and Robusta programmes
- Tropical fruit character from natural, sun-dried processing
- Grown directly bordering the Nagarhole Tiger Reserve, under real forest-edge agroforestry
- A cup profile sitting distinctly between Arabica and Robusta, useful for education-focused menus
- Traceable to a single, three-generation family estate

Behind the Cup
VPG Estate sits in Balele, Kodagu, sharing a direct boundary with the Nagarhole Tiger Reserve. The estate is owned by Priya Belliappa’s family, planted by her grandfather, Malachira Subbaiah, and continued today by her father, Sharnoo Belliappa, the second generation to farm the land, with the family now into a third generation of involvement.
Excelsa, botanically Coffea liberica, is a less common coffee species grown in far smaller volume worldwide than Arabica or Robusta. Locally, it’s often grouped with Liberica under the name “Mara Kaapi,” meaning tree coffee, a reference to the notably tall, upright growth habit these trees display compared to standard coffee plants. VPG grows Excelsa alongside its Robusta and heritage Peridinia plantings, part of the estate’s wider agroforestry system intercropped with pepper, cocoa, and native fruit trees.
The estate spans 50 acres at 800 metres, and its direct boundary with Nagarhole also made it the setting for Frayed Lines, a documentary film observing landscape, labour, and daily life on a South Indian coffee estate.
India Coffee Company sources this coffee directly from the Belliappa family at VPG Estate, making this rare, forest-boundary Coorg Excelsa available to North American specialty roasters.

About Coorg Excelsa, Natural Coffee Lot
Balele sits in Kodagu, directly bordering the Nagarhole Tiger Reserve, a location that places coffee cultivation immediately adjacent to protected forest rather than at a remove from it. At 800 metres elevation, this Excelsa grows under conditions cooler than the lowland Southeast Asian regions, Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, where most of the world’s Excelsa is currently produced.
Excelsa occupies an unusual position in coffee botany, historically classified as its own species before later being grouped under Coffea liberica. The trees grow noticeably taller than standard Arabica or Robusta plants, giving rise to the local name Mara Kaapi, tree coffee. This height makes harvesting more labour-intensive, one reason Excelsa remains a minor crop globally despite growing interest in it as a climate-resilient species, since the trees show resistance to several common coffee afflictions that affect Arabica.
Natural, sun-dried processing, used for this lot, involves drying the whole cherry in the sun rather than pulping it first. Sugars and compounds from the fruit ferment into the bean as it dries, building the tropical fruit character, jackfruit and mango in particular, that natural process Excelsa from this region is known for, while the species’ own moderate acidity, between Arabica’s brightness and Robusta’s flatness, gives the cup a distinct structure regardless of process.
The estate’s agroforestry system, intercropping coffee with pepper, cocoa, and native fruit trees, keeps the land functioning as an extension of the neighbouring tiger reserve.
