Flavor Journey
Roast Approach
Medium roast suits this lot well, giving the cocoa and tobacco notes room to develop while keeping the popcorn-like character from turning into straight char. Natural processing already builds significant sugar and body into the bean during sun-drying, so this lot doesn’t need a particularly dark roast to feel full and rounded, the way some washed Robusta does.
Old Peridinia trees, some up to 90 years old, tend to produce lower yields than younger commercial Robusta plantings, a tradeoff often associated with denser, more concentrated beans. That density means this lot can carry a slightly extended development time at medium roast without losing clarity, allowing the natural sugars built up during drying to caramelize fully.
Pushed to medium-dark, the cocoa deepens further and tobacco becomes more pronounced, a profile well suited to espresso and milk-based drinks, where the added body and crema this lot’s natural processing supports come through clearly. Pushed too light, the cup can read as underdeveloped, since natural Robusta generally needs to clear first crack with confidence to shed excess moisture evenly.
Why Roasters Choose This Coffee
Coorg Peridinia Robusta, Natural comes from VPG Estate, a three-generation family farm in Balele, Kodagu, sharing a direct boundary with the Nagarhole Tiger Reserve. The estate’s old Peridinia trees, some as old as 90 years, were planted long before the commercial Robusta selections that dominate most of Kodagu’s coffee today, giving this lot a genuine heritage-variety identity rather than a marketing label applied after the fact.
Roasters value this lot for the combination of old-growth character and natural processing. Lower yields from aged trees are traditionally associated with denser, more concentrated beans, and the natural, sun-dried process builds further sweetness and body into the cup as the whole cherry dries, producing cocoa, popcorn, and tobacco notes with a full, structured body.
Grown under agroforestry intercropped with pepper, cocoa, and native fruit trees, directly bordering protected forest, this lot offers roasters a Robusta shaped by growing conditions few commercial operations can replicate, alongside a variety story that stands apart from standard commodity Robusta.
In the cup, Coorg Peridinia Robusta, Natural typically expresses:
- cocoa and light chocolate character upfront
- a popcorn-like toasted note through the body
- tobacco and light spice on the finish
- full, structured body typical of natural process Robusta
Why Roasters Love Coorg Peridinia Robusta, Natural:
- A heritage Robusta variety from trees up to 90 years old, planted well before commercial selections
- Natural, sun-dried processing that builds sweetness and body into a genuinely old-growth bean
- Grown directly bordering the Nagarhole Tiger Reserve, under real forest-edge agroforestry
- Full body suited to espresso and milk-based drinks
- Traceable to a single, three-generation family estate

Behind the Cup
VPG Estate sits in Balele, Kodagu, sharing a direct boundary with the Nagarhole Tiger Reserve. The estate is owned by Priya Belliappa’s family, planted by her grandfather, Malachira Subbaiah, and continued today by her father, Sharnoo Belliappa, the second generation to farm the land, with the family now into a third generation of involvement.
This lot comes from the estate’s old Peridinia trees, some as old as 90 years, planted long before most of the commercial Robusta selections grown across Kodagu today existed. Peridinia is a heritage Robusta lineage with roots outside the standard Robusta breeding pool, introduced to Indian coffee growing regions from Sri Lanka’s Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya during the Coffee Leaf Rust outbreak of the late 19th century, when growers needed a hardier alternative to failing Arabica.
The estate spans 50 acres at 800 metres, growing Robusta, Excelsa, and Peridinia side by side, intercropped with pepper, cocoa, and native fruit trees within a wider agroforestry system. Coffee here is grown as an extension of the neighbouring tiger reserve rather than land cleared apart from it.
The estate’s boundary with Nagarhole also made it the setting for Frayed Lines, a documentary film observing landscape, labour, and daily life on a South Indian coffee estate.
India Coffee Company sources this coffee directly from the Belliappa family at VPG Estate, making this heritage, old-growth Coorg Robusta available to North American specialty roasters.

About Coorg Peridinia Robusta, Natural Coffee Lot
Balele sits in Kodagu, directly bordering the Nagarhole Tiger Reserve, a location that places coffee cultivation immediately adjacent to protected forest rather than at a remove from it. At 800 metres elevation, growing conditions here support a denser bean than lower-altitude commodity Robusta, cooler temperatures slowing cherry development and building structure into the finished coffee.
Peridinia is a heritage Robusta variety distinct from the commercial selections, such as CxR, that dominate most Indian Robusta production today. Introduced from Sri Lanka’s Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya during the Coffee Leaf Rust crisis of the late 19th century, it offered growers a hardier alternative to failing Arabica while retaining a cup character distinct from later, yield-focused Robusta breeding. Old Peridinia trees like those at VPG, some up to 90 years old, are increasingly rare, most having been replaced by younger, higher-yielding commercial varieties elsewhere in Kodagu.
Natural, sun-dried processing involves drying the whole cherry in the sun rather than removing the skin and pulp first. As the cherry dries around the bean, sugars and other compounds from the fruit ferment into it, building body and sweetness that a washed process would strip away, a method that suits Robusta’s naturally lower acidity and benefits from the additional density older trees like these tend to produce.
The estate’s agroforestry system, intercropping coffee with pepper, cocoa, and native fruit trees, keeps the land functioning as an extension of the neighbouring tiger reserve.
